Content: "Surprisingly little attention has been devoted to examining basic assumptions regarding the purpose, method, and perspective on which the social work profession rests. The Philosophical Foundations of Social Work explores core philosophical issues in the field, and demonstrates their far-reaching implications for practice and research." "Although the field of social work has grown to encompass knowledge and understanding of such issues as mental illness, poverty, aging, substance abuse, and community development, "Reamer argues that the profession's philosophical foundations have gone largely unexamined. "The heart of any profession," he writes, "consists of a philosophical oriented statement of purpose and perspective." This book lays the groundwork for such a task." "Beginning with an original and succinct assessment of political philosophy - specifically, the state's role in social welfare, distributive justice, equality, and welfare rights - Reamer turns his attention to major themes such as moral philosophy, logic, epistemology, and aesthetics." "While Reamer's philosophical framework is nuanced and sophisticated, he never loses sight of the practical applications of his theories in regard to case work, group practice, family intervention, social policy, and administration. The topics raised in this provocative account will be of enduring interest to students, educators, and practitioners."--BOOK JACKET.

Content: Few people experience life inside of prison. Even fewer are charged with the formidable responsibility of deciding whether inmates should be released. In his twenty-four years on the Rhode Island Parole Board, Frederic G. Reamer has judged the fates of thousands of inmates, deciding which are ready to reenter society and which are not. It is a complicated choice that balances injury to victims and their families against an offender's capacity for transformation. With rich retellings of criminal cases-some banal, some brutal-On the Parole Board is a singular book that explains from an insider's perspective how a variety of factors play into the board's decisions: the ongoing effect on victims and their loved ones, the life histories of offenders, the circumstances of the crimes, and the powerful and often extraordinary displays of forgiveness and remorse. Pulling back the curtain on a process largely shrouded in mystery, Reamer lays bare the thorny philosophical issues of crime and justice and their staggering consequences for inmates, victims, and the public at large. Reamer and his colleagues often hope, despite encountering behavior at its worst, that criminals who have made horrible mistakes have the capacity for redemption. Yet that hope must be tempered with a realistic appraisal of risk, given the potentially grave consequences of releasing an inmate who may commit a future crime. This book will appeal to anyone interested in the complexities of the criminal justice system, the need to correct its injustices, and the challenges of those who must decide when justice has been served.

Content: In recent years a dizzying array of programs has emerged to meet the needs of struggling teens and their families-wilderness therapy programs, therapeutic boarding schools, alternative schools, mentoring and court diversion programs, independent living programs, and myriad day treatment and partial hospitalization services. Yet not all of these offerings employ mental health professionals or follow evidence-based treatment protocols. Some programs are licensed and accredited, but many are not, and some use techniques that are highly controversial, even abusive, resulting in injury and accidental death.Frederic G. Reamer and Deborah H. Siegel have written the first scholarly book on this influential and controversial industry. They begin with a time line of Americans' changing attitudes toward challenging teens and the programs and schools established to handle this population. Then they summarize reputable organizations, including a selection of community-based and residential programs and schools, and provide brief descriptions of typical services. The authors candidly discuss a number of troubling scandals and tragedies, exposing the tragic consequences of emotionally and physically abusive practices, and recommend a range of empirically sound interventions for the clinical challenges of adolescent depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, oppositional behavior, eating disorders, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The authors conclude with a blueprint for reform and twenty "best practice" principles relating to harm prevention, program-based discipline, industry regulation, quality assurance, parental involvement, st

Content: Should a therapist disclose personal information to a client, accept a client's gift, or provide a former client with a job? Is it appropriate to exchange email or text messages with clients or correspond with them on social networking websites? Some acts, such as initiating a sexual relationship with a client, are clearly prohibited, yet what about more subtle interactions, such as hugging or accepting invitations to a social event or joining a client's social networking site? Can one maintain a friendship with a former client or client's relative, or is this a conflict of interest that

Content: "Organized around five basic areas of inquiry-political philosophy, moral philosophy, logic, epistemology, and aesthetics-this book examines critical issues in social work such as ethics, the allocation of limited resources, and the role of government in social welfare. In this theory-heavy monograph targeted at DSW students and researchers, the social work scholar Rick Reamer surveys the most central, compelling, and enduring philosophical issues in the profession. This second edition will contain thorough overhauls and updates to the original material. To the political philosophy section, he will add material on post-modern and feminist perspectives and the relevance of political philosophy concepts to contemporary challenges of growing income inequality, the role of police in society, and mass incarceration. To the moral philosophy section, he will add material on the philosophical literature of virtue theory, the "ethics of care," feminist ethics, and non-Western approaches, and extend the application to ethical challenges that did not exist in 1993: social workers' use of technology to communicate with and serve clients remotely, the allocation of scarce resources during a pandemic, and social workers' involvement in end-of-life. He will substantially revise the examples in the Logic and Aesthetics section to illustrate contemporary challenges in social work. And to the Epistemology section, he will add material on the role of empiricism in social work and the dramatic evolution of the evidence-based and evidence-informed models in social work"--
