    Content: This paper studies the impact of a program that provides grants for technical assistance on the interest rates and outreach of credit unions in Mexico. Credit unions financing rural borrowers received grants in different years. The study uses propensity score matching and relies additionally on the timing of the grants to identify effects. The analysis shows that the program lowered lending interest rates by up to 2.6 percentage points (from a pre-program average of 17.8 percent). This drop appears to be due to lower operating costs and better risk management, as reflected in a lower nonperforming loan ratio. The program also raised credit unions' returns on assets and significantly increased the value of their loan portfolio.

    Content: Almost every country in the Middle East and North Africa (MNA) region is faced with the increasing significant burden imposed by Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) on their health systems. The focus thus far has been on executing emergency interventions to prevent, detect, and respond to the COVID-19 epidemic. COVID-19 models for MNA countries indicate that the epidemic is far from its peak, indicating the emergency will remain for the foreseeable future and result in a reduction in demand for essential non-COVID-19 health services. MNA countries have a wide range of at-risk populations, which necessitate a longer-term, health system-wide approach to managing the COVID-19 pandemic in addition to the emergency projects prepared. This note describes the impact of COVID-19 on the health systems of countries in the MNA region as well as ways to mitigate this impact. It presents options to mitigate this impact, across relief, response, and recovery phases. This note presents a starting point for discussions across the region for priority health system strengthening areas

    Content: Agriculture and food systems in Latin America and the Caribbean Region (LAC) are rightfully recognized as among the most successful on the planet: they have fed a fast-growing population, facilitated economic development, enabled urbanization, generated substantial exports, and helped drive down global hunger and poverty. Yet despite these significant contributions, the public image of the region's agriculture and food systems as dynamic, productive, and efficient reflectsonly part of a more complicated reality. The impressive achievements have come at the expense of significant environmental and health costs. LAC agriculture uses over one-third of the region's land area, consumes nearly three-quarters of the region's fresh water resources, and generates almost one-half of the region's greenhouse gas emissions. And despite the consistent food production surpluses, millions of people in LAC regularly go hungry or suffer from malnutrition and related diseases. In short, the region's successes in feeding the population and exporting food to the rest of the world are exacting high costs on people and on the environment
