Die «Silver Surfer» oder «Best Ager», wie Senioren im Internet gerne bezeichnet werden, verzeichnen in den letzten Jahren die höchsten Zuwächse und implementieren zunehmend das Internet in ihren Alltag. Umso unverständlicher ist es, dass über das Nutzungsverhalten dieser Zielgruppe wenig bekannt ist. Diese Studie will die bestehende Lücke schließen. Zielstellung ist die empirische Überprüfung, ob das Internet eine kompensierende Funktion auf eine große und größer werdende Klientel hat bzw. eine aktivierende Wirkung auf das alternde Individuum. Diese Vorstellung folgt der Annahme, dass Menschen mit zunehmendem Alter etwas fehlt bzw. etwas verlieren. In der Bilanzierung ihrer Lebenslagen ergeben sich jedoch nicht nur ein Bild von Defiziten, sondern auch viele Ressourcen. Die Auswertungen zeigen, dass ältere Onliner das Internet reflexionsorientiert und bedarfsgerecht zur Kompensation ihrer Defizite und Verluste nutzen. Im Abgleich mit gerontosoziologischen Theorien erweisen sie sich als verantwortungsvolle Medienrezipienten, die das Internet zum «erfolgreichen Altern» einsetzen.
