De landschappen en stadsgezichten van Jan Weissenbruch (1822-1880) zijn onovertroffen in de Nederlandse 19de-eeuwse schilderkunst. Met zijn kraakheldere verbeelding van Hollandse stadspleinen, sluizen, ophaalbruggen en landwegen neemt Weissenbruch een unieke positie in: geen van zijn tijdgenoten wist zo navoelbaar het heldere licht weer te geven van een stille zomerdag aan de Lek, of de zachte zon die op een late namiddag schijnt over de keien van een oude binnenstad. 00Weissenbruck bevond zich op een kruispunt tussen de belangrijkste artistieke stromingen van zijn tijd: Romantiek en Realisme. Het heldere licht waarmee Weissenbruch zijn stadsgezichten overgoot, brengt elke steen met de grootste objectiviteit in beeld. Tegelijk roept het echter een subtiele maar alles doordringende ?stemming? op. 00Bijna alle plekken die Weissenbruch schilderde zijn exact te lokaliseren. Van de binnenstad van Den Haag tot de oevers van de Lek, en van de Merwede bij Dordrecht tot aan de Markt in Luik. Toch veroorloofde hij zich allerhande vrijheden bij het schilderen. Hij poetste vuiligheid en armoede weg, verandere soms de architectuur en liet zich grondig inspireren door het werk van Hollandse meesters uit de zeventiende eeuw. Al hielden zijn schilderijen wel een eigentijds karakter. Door kleurgebruik, standpunt en compositie schiep hij een ideaalversie van het Nederland van zijn tijd.
