    Series Statement: World of art
Content: A fascination with the "primitive" lies at the heart of some of the most influential developments in Western art produced between 1890 and 1950 - a time that witnessed both the "heroic" period of modern art and the apogee and decline of the West's colonial power. Many groups have a times been labeled as primitive, including the so-called tribal peoples from Africa, Oceania and North America, but also prehistoric cultures, European peasants, the insane and children. Through the lens of their own society, many modern artists looked both to the art and to the world-view of the primitive as a means of challenging established beliefs, but the primitive to which they turned was as varied as the movements in modern art of which they were a part. Colin Rhodes breaks new ground, drawing on a wide and diverse range of material, from high art to popular entertainment, from Darwin to Freud; the critical overview he presents supersedes all previous studies on the subject.

Content: 'The World According to Roger Ballen', co-authored with Colin Rhodes, looks at Ballen's career in the wider cultural context beyond photography, including his connections with and collections of Art Brut. It features photographs selected from across Ballen's career, along with installations created exclusively for the exhibition at Halle Saint Pierre and photographs of objects and works from Ballen's own collection of Art Brut. Organized thematically, with texts by Colin Rhodes and an introduction and interview with Ballen by Martine Lusardy (the Director of the Halle Saint Pierre), The World According to Roger Ballen is both a catalogue of the first, major exhibition of Ballen's work in France and an exploration of Ballen's positioning within and connections to the wider context of modern and contemporary art
Note: "Published on the occasion of the exhibition 'The world according to Roger Ballen' at the Musée de la Halle Saint Pierre, Paris, 7 September 2019 - 31 July 2020."--Colophon

Uniform Title: Outsider art: spontaneous alternatives
Content: "Outsider art is work created by self-taught isolates, untrained visionaries, spiritualists, folk artists, psychiatric patients, prisoners, and others beyond the imposed margins of society and the art market. Coined by Roger Cardinal in 1972 as an English equivalent for Jean Dubuffet's category of 'art brut' - literally 'raw art' - and originally regarded as defining a distinctly western phenomenon, the term has come to encompass a wide variety of work produced across the world. In this indispensable guide, substantially revised and updated with greater coverage of global practitioners, Colin Rhodes surveys the history and reception of outsider art, while providing fresh insights into the achievements of both major figures and recently discovered artists. From now canonical and widely celebrated artists including Nek Chand, Aloïse Corbaz, Henry Darger, Madge Gill and Adolf Wölfli, to contemporary practitioners such as Noviadi Angkasapura, Marilena Pelosi and Shinichi Sawada, these individuals passionately and obsessively pursue the pictorial expression of their vision."--Page [4] of cover
Note: Includes bibliographical references and index , Art Brut and its affinities -- Psychopathological art -- Alternative worlds -- Self-taught visionaries -- Other positions -- The contemporary turn.

Content: This book is the culmination of Ballen's ongoing study of the connections between photography, drawing, the mind and the body. Created between the years 2004 and 2008, these 90-odd black-and-white images encourage viewers to delve deep into the darkest part of their psyches. The images in this new monograph were inspired by the simple act of drawing on windows - a practice that Ballen observed first-hand in many communities. From there, he started to experiment using different spray paints on glass and then 'drawing on' or removing the paint with a sharp object to let natural light through. Finally, he photographed the results with a macro lens using black-and-white film. These black, dimensionless spaces effectively operate as canvases onto which Ballen projects pictorially his thoughts and emotions, creating, in effect, a theatre of the mind. The plates are separated into seven chapters or 'acts', with each one introduced by a text written by Ballen himself. Carving out a realm that is both earthly and otherworldly, physical and spiritual, his work transcends all traditional concepts of photography
