A en croire Giono, l'écriture n'aurait été pour lui qu'un divertissement. Non pas un simple jeu, entendons-le bien, mais le moyen de n'être plus "l'homme plein de misères" dont parle Pascal. Et de devenir l'une des voix narratives les plus fortes de l'histoire de la littérature. Démobilisé en 1918, très marqué par la guerre, Giono retrouve à vingt-trois ans son poste d'employé de banque à Manosque. Une décennie s'écoule au cours de laquelle il passe son temps à rédiger, en marge de son travail, des fiches descriptives révélant l'essence véritable des clients de la banque. "Une excellente école", selon lui, pour la "connaissance du coeur humain". Puis, en quelques mois, il écrit Colline (1929)
