Thérèse Delombre lebt mit ihrem Sohn Georget in einer Villa in einem Dorf der Provence. Es ist das Jahr 1914 und Thérèse erhält die Nachricht vom Tod ihres Mannes an der Front. Die Witwe lebt fortan nur noch für ihren kleinen Sohn und schottet sich mehr und mehr von der Gemeinschaft ab, bis zu dem Tag, als drei deutsche Kriegsgefangene ins Dorf kommen. Thérèse stürzt sich in eine Liebesaffäre mit einem der Deutschen, was nicht lange geheim bleibt. Auch Georget lehnt den Mann von Anfang an ab. Dieser Roman mit autobiografischen Zügen erschien im Original bereits 1931 und löste nach seinem Erscheinen gleich einen Skandal aus. Nicht nur, dass sein Autor die außereheliche Beziehung einer französischen Witwe mit einem deutschen Kriegsgefangenen thematisierte. Vielmehr stand hier auch noch das sexuelle Begehren selbst im Vordergrund. Auf jeden Fall handelt es sich bei Richauds erstem Roman, der auf Deutsch erscheint, um große Literatur, die hier wieder entdeckt werden kann. Nicht zuletzt soll dieser Gesellschaftsroman erst Richauds Landsmann Albert Camus zum Schreiben verleitet haben. Für größere Bestände.
