Janusz Korczak wurde1878 in Warschau geboren, 1942 wurde er in Treblinka ermordet - gemeinsam mit den Kindern des Waisenhauses, das er gegründet hatte und bis zuletzt leitete. Als Arzt, Schriftsteller und Erzieher widmete er sein Leben den Ausgestoßenen und Aufgegebenen, vor allem den Hilflosesten, den "abgegebenen" Kindern.Janusz Korczak war eine religiöse Persönlichkeit, ein Mensch, der sein Leben lang darüber nachdachte, was den Menschen, abgesehen vom Hunger, umtreibt. Im Glauben sah er Hoffnung und Halt, die existentielle menschliche Einsamkeit ertragen zu können. Seine Religiosität war nicht konfessionell eingeengt. Der Menschenfreund Janusz Korczak lebte Liebe, eine Liebe, die ihr Leben hingibt für die Freunde. Mit seinem freiwilligen Tod mit den Schutzbefohlenen hat er Nächstenliebe und Selbstliebe, das Gebot, an dem Gesetz und Glaube hängen, zur Einheit verschmolzen. Korczak schrieb fur Kinder und Erwachsene. 1937 wurde er mit dem Polnischen Lorbeer für Literatur und 1972 posthum mit dem Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels ausgezeichnet.
