En 1822, Jean-François Champollion déchiffrait les hiéroglyphes et ouvrait la voie à une nouvelle discipline, l'égyptologie. Si la réussite de Champollion fascine autant encore aujourd'hui, c'est qu'il est la figure la plus emblématique de ceux que l'on peut nommer « les déchiffreurs », car il n'est pas le seul à avoir réussi l'exploit de déchiffrer une écriture. Ils sont nombreux ceux qui ont tenté de percer le mystère de ces écrits venant de cultures anciennes, et une poignée seulement à avoir mener à bien ces recherches. Mais comment aborder une écriture dont on a tout oublié, dont on ignore le système utilisé, la langue transcrite ? De l'abbé Barthélémy à Michael Ventris en passant par Jean-François Champollion, l'ouvrage revient sur les figures les plus emblématiques des déchiffreurs et les méthodes utilisées pour percer le mystère des écritures oubliées. Les auteurs font également le point sur les travaux actuels et l'avancée de la recherche autour de l'écriture maya, du méroïtique ou encore de l'élamite linéaire. Enfin, ils abordent les difficultés que peuvent présenter certaines écritures encore non déchiffrées ou dont la langue nous est aujourd'hui inconnue
