Content: This volume presents the invited lectures of a conference devoted to Infinite Length Modules, held at Bielefeld, September 7-11, 1998. Some additional surveys have been included in order to establish a unified picture. The scientific organization of the conference was in the hands of K. Brown (Glasgow), P. M. Cohn (London), I. Reiten (Trondheim) and C. M. Ringel (Bielefeld). The conference was concerned with the role played by modules of infinite length when dealing with problems in the representation theory of algebras. The investi gation of such modules always relies on information concerning modules of finite length, for example simple modules and their possible extensions. But the converse is also true: recent developments in representation theory indicate that a full un derstanding of the category of finite dimensional modules, even over a finite dimen sional algebra, requires consideration of infinite dimensional, thus infinite length, modules. For instance, the important notion of tameness uses one-parameter fami lies of modules, or, alternatively, generic modules and they are of infinite length. If one tries to exhibit a presentation of a module category, it turns out to be essential to take into account the indecomposable modules which are algebraically compact, or, equivalently, pure injective. Specific methods have been developed over the last few years dealing with such special situations as group algebras of finite groups or noetherian rings, and there are surprising relations to topology and geometry. The conference outlined the present state of the art.

Series Statement: Process Thought , 10
Content: Gathering 115 entries written by 101 internationally renowned experts in their fields, the Handbook of Whiteheadian Process Thought aims at canvassing the current state of knowledge in Whiteheadian scholarship and at identifying promising directions for future investigations through (internal) cross-elucidation and (external) interdisciplinary development. Two kinds of entries are weaved together in order to interpret Whitehead secundum Whitehead and to read him from the vantage point of interdisciplinary and crossdisciplinary research. The "thematic " entries provide (i) a broad contextualisation of the issue at stake; (ii) a focus on Whitehead's treatment (if any) or of a possible Whiteheadian treatment of the issue; (iii) a history of relevant scholarship; (iv) a personal assessment by the Author. The "biographical " entries provide (i) a brief vita of the targeted thinker; (ii) a sketch of his/her categories relevant to the Whiteheadian scholarship; (iii) a personal assessment of the actual (or possible) Whiteheadian semantic transfer to or from the thinker.

Note: From April 1, 1984 until March 31, 1991 the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft has sponsored the project "Representation Theory of Finite Groups and Finite Di mensional Algebras". The proposal for this project was submitted by B. Huppert (Mainz), B. Fischer (Bielefeld), G. Michler (Essen), H. Pahlings (Aachen) and C. M. Ringel (Bielefeld) in order to strengthen the interaction between the different re search areas in representation theory. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft has given many research positions and fellowships for young algebraists enabling them to do research at their own uni versities or as visitors at well known research institutions in America, Australia, England and France. The whole project benefitted very much from an extensive exchange programme between German and American scientists sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and by the National Science Foundation of the United States. This volume presents lectures given in a final conference and reports by members of the project. It is divided into two parts. The first part contains seven survey articles describing recent advances in different areas of representation theory. These articles do not only concentrate on the work done by the German research groups, but also inform on major developments of the subject at all. The volume omits those topics already treated in book form. In particular, it does not contain a survey on K.

Note: A joint research project of algebraists from the universities of Antwerp, Biele feld, Essen, Leeds, Paris VI and Trondheim on "Invariants and Representations of Algebras" has been supported from 1991 to 1997 by the European Union programmes "Science" and "Human Capital and Mobility", it was coordinated by Mme M. -P. Malliavin (Paris VI). Later, algebraists from the universities of Edinburgh, Ioannina, Murcia and Torun joined the collaboration. This network is now coordinated by C. M. Ringel (Bielefeld). It has received funds from the European Commission in order to organize four conferences as part of the pro gramme "Training and Mobility of Researchers", to be held during the period 1997-1999 at Essen, Murcia, Bielefeld and Ioannina. The first Euroconference of this series took place at the University of Essen, April 1-4, 1997. It was devoted to "Computational Methods for Representations of Groups and Algebras" . The organizers were P. Draxler (Bielefeld) and G. Michler (Essen). This volume collects most of the material presented at the conference. There had been an additional introductory lecture by H. Gollan; it is not included here, since its contents is available in the lecture notes: P. Fleischmann, G. O. Michler, P. Roelse, J. Rosenboom, R. Staszewski, C. Wagner, M. Weller, "Linear algebra over small finite fields on parallel machines", Vorlesungen Fachbereich Math. Univ. Essen, 23 (1995). Together with these notes, this volume will provide a survey on the present state of art
