Im Januar 1893 beschließt Kaiser Wilhelm II. in Mutzig eine neue Festung bauen zu lassen. Gemeinsam mit dem Festungsgürtel von Straßburg sollte die Feste Kaiser Wilhelm II die Rheinebene zwischen Straßburg und den Vogesen gegen französische Angriffe im Elsass sperren. Mit einer Gesamtfläche von 254 Hektar, 22 Fernkampfgeschützen unter Panzerschutz und einer Besatzung von 8000 Mann, war sie im Jahre 1914 die stärkste deutsche Festung. Die Feste Mutzig ist die erste betonierte und mit Elektrizität ausgestattete Befestigung, die wegen ihrer aufgelösten Bauweise als Prototyp des neuen deutschen Festungssystems gilt. (AUT)
