Die Erwerbung und Bereitstellung elektronischer Produkte Zeitschriften und Datenbanken binden immer größere Teile der Bibliotheksetats. Um diese Kosten einzudämmen sowie Rationalisierungseffekte zu erzielen und Solidarstrukturen zu schaffen haben die Bibliotheken seit Ende des vorigen Jahrhunderts eine der Geschäftswelt nachgeahmte Strategie entwickelt indem sie Einkaufs- und Verwaltungsgemeinschaften bilden. Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht, das sehr kontrovers diskutierte Konsortialmodell zu bewerten. Nach einer allgemeinen Einführung, die die Ursachen der Bibliothekskonsortien erörtert und die Konsortiallandschaft skizziert, wird in einem zweiten Teil das Konsortialmodell am konkreten Beispiel der Universitätsbibliothek Mainz im Rahmen des HeBIS-Konsortiums analysiert. Der dritte Teil der Arbeit zieht eine vergleichende Bilanz. Während die UB Mainz trotz schwieriger Vereinbarung bindender Konsortialklauseln mit ihren zweischichtigen Strukturen vom Konsortialmodell finanziell und organisatorisch profitiert, bleiben in den Fachkreisen die Bibliothekskonsortien, insbesondere wegen der schlechten Nutzung der von den Anbietern als Kompensationen angesehenen Pakete (sog. Big Deal), sehr umstritten und gelten sogar für manche Kritiker als Verschärfer der Informationskrise. Abschließend werden die letzten Entwicklungen bzw. Alternativen zu den Konsortien in ihrer aktuellen Form aufgezeichnet: Neue Geschäftsmodelle im bestehenden Konsortialrahmen (wie Mischangebote mit Pay-per-View, Umstellung auf E-Only) sowie umfassendere Bezugsmodelle (Nationallizenzen der DFG, Lizenzabschlüsse im übernationalen Rahmen wie GASCO oder Knowledge Exchange) die allerdings alle auf einem Konsortialschema basieren und sich ebenso wenig wie die Regionalkonsortien von den traditionellen Versorgungswegen lösen können. Das Open-Access-Publizieren als die konsequenteste Möglichkeit, das Informationswesen unabhängiger gegenüber den kommerziellen Anbietern zu gestalten, wird hier nur kurz als Problemlösung gestreift.
