Content: The stunting rate in the Philippines is high for the country's level of income. Almost one in three children under age five is stunted, and the rate is significantly higher among children from low income households. The undernutrition challenge is likely to exacerbate with the economic shock and food insecurity that COVID-19 has brought. The country's flagship safety net program, Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), has a great potential to improve nutrition outcomes of children living in poverty, by providing cash assistance conditional upon their health check-ups and growth monitoring and raising caregiver's knowledge and awareness on nutrition through family development sessions. There was strong evidence of the effectiveness of 4Ps on nutrition outcomes during the early stage of program implementation. Over time, however, 4Ps' impact on nutrition faded for several reasons, most notably with the decreasing number of young children (who need nutrition the most) served by the program. This policy note proposes key areas where 4Ps can further strengthen to improve the nutrition outcomes among children in poor and vulnerable households

Content: The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has caused a dramatic disruption in the delivery of education and health services in the Philippines. With school closures and challenges in the delivery of distance learning, students learning losses are expected to be enormous. Meanwhile, the health system is strained under the challenge of management of Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases which likely crowd out the delivery of essential health services. This note, a third note of the series using the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Low Income Household Panel and Economic (HOPE) Survey, investigates the impact of the pandemic on education and health behaviors as well as other welfare indicators of low-income households in the Philippines

Content: In 2015, the World Bank embarked on a collaborative effort to understand and address the jobs challenge in Mindanao through the Mindanao Jobs Report (MJR). Good jobs - jobs that raise real income and lift people out of poverty - were needed for more than two million Mindanawons who were either unemployed or underemployed at the time of writing. In addition, large cohorts of youth would enter the labor force in the next few years and better jobs were needed for the many Mindanawons who were currently employed informally and who accounted for more than half of total employment in Mindanao. Following extensive consultations with many of Mindanao's leaders and stakeholders, the report came up with recommendations around the three areas, namely: (1) raising agricultural productivity and improving farm-to-market connectivity; (2) boosting human development; and (3) addressing drivers of conflict and fragility and building up institutions in Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and conflict-affected areas

Content: An important component of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), the flagship conditional cash transfer (CCT) program of the Philippines, is the delivery of complementary services such as Family Development Sessions (FDS) and Youth Development Sessions (YDS) to program beneficiaries. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, these were regular face-to-face sessions providing practical information on topics such as parenting, early childhood care, and disaster preparedness to adult beneficiaries and guidance on adolescent dynamics to young children in 4Ps households, with the overall aim of promoting positive behavioral changes. This technical note examines the process undertaken to enhance and align the content of the FDS and YDS based on the 4Ps law that mandates a maximum 7-year operational period, and it discusses feedback and insights from beneficiaries and implementers. Moreover, it considers the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and related lockdowns, which have led to mobility restrictions among beneficiaries and implementers since March 2020. Due to the pandemic, the delivery of FDS have relied mostly on broadcast and social media platforms, with options for small group neighborhood sessions in areas with low rates of COVID-19 infections, while YDS have been mostly suspended due to school closures nationwide, without in-person gathering. For a more effective delivery of these learning sessions, this policy note proposes key recommendations on adapting to future shocks and emerging beneficiary needs, developing strategic communications, mobilizing resources, strengthening monitoring and evaluation, and connecting to core values. In particular, it proposes regular updating of module content to maintain relevance and applicability, strengthening alternative modes of program delivery to increase coverage, providing training to facilitators to improve capacity, raising awareness to increase program uptake, creating a clear monitoring and evaluation system to track progress, leveraging the use of technology, and providing post-program exit support to sustain positive behavioral changes among beneficiaries

Content: The Pythagorean theorem, is a mathematical relationship, of real complexity, which is learned in basic training and provides a considerable value practical, theoretical and didactic, both in its version aritmetico-algebraico ; as in its geometric version (Martinez, 2000). Referring to the modeling is understood as the process which has its genesis in the conceptualization of a real situation, using mathematics as tool of modeling for other sciences (Rodriguez, 2010). In the classroom, students built their knowledge, favouring the development of a functional education system in mathematics (Rodriguez, 2010). Modeling is a bridge between mathematics and the experiences of the real life of students; so is learning that contains a lot of cognitive support (Rodríguez, 2010). On the other hand technology is an essential classroom actor to work with mathematical models, (Jacobini, 2007), is a support to overcome many obstacles, emphasizing in the use of the applets (Bishop, 1994) as elements of pages websites (Berners, 1989); its educational value is develop active learning (Borromeo, 2006). Applets (Bohigas, Jaén and Novell, 2003), seconded by the student in the process of learn to visualize geometric figures result from the proof of this theorem, experiential way through technology; making participate students are learning, causing to shape their beliefs, attitudes, and to realize the importance of the area for itself and its community
