Der Film beobachtet über vier Jahre hinweg den Bau des Mahnmals vom Setzen der ersten Stelen bis zu der Zeit nach der Eröffnung. Er befragt Passanten und Besucher des Denkmals nach deren Haltungen und Gefühlen. Ergänzend entstanden Interviews mit Lea Rosh, der Initiatorin des Denkmals, und seinem Architekten Peter Eisenman. Zugleich reflektiert der Film den Denkprozess, den das Mahnmal in der Filmemacherin ausgelöst hat. Diese persönliche Auseinandersetzung mit ihrer Identität als Deutsche ruft in ihr die Erinnerung an die glücklichste Zeit ihrer Kindheit im besetzten Polen wach und ihre damit verbundenen ambivalenten Gefühle.
