After his remarkable directorial début Nadar solo and its no less brilliant followup Como un avión estrellado, Ezequiel Acuña's third feature length movie, Excursiones (Sightseeing) does nothing but consolidate his stature as a director with a vision all his own, a perception so vast of his own milieu that he can see for miles just zooming in and focusing on the immediate surroundings. The appropriately named Excursiones brings back together the characters from Acuña's short Rocío (2000), a threesome that embodies the main psychological and personal types. After graduating from high school, in spite of having been best friends they stop seeing each other for some ten years. "Erh..., yeah, we stopped hanging around for a while," says Marcos, the one with the "loser" tag on his forehead. Fired from his job at a confectionery company, and unable to find another means of sustenance, he resuscitates an old short play staged at high school's graduation party. The idea is to rework that adollescent draft into a play to be actually staged, so that Marcos finds a way of reinventing himself. To this aim he enlists the collaboration of Martín, one of his high school best friends, who̷s now a successful television writer. Reluctant to refuse but way too embarrassed to deny his help, Martín eventually agrees to sort of tutor Marcos' play, who's got his plans all laid out: a fringe playhouse has agreed to schedule the play in its programming, and all he needs is a writing and acting coach... The lethargy and drifting of Acuña's characters bring back to mind Ettore Scola's C'eravamo tanto amati (We All Loved Each Other So Much, 1974), with Vittorio Gassman as the one who pulls out, succeeds and severs all ties with his old pals. Acuña's Excursiones, in addition, strikes a balance between comedy and drama, all in a seamless fashion, thanks to a script that, try as you may, has no weak points to single out. Minimalistic, keenly obsessive with detail, stretching tension to the limit to then slacken off smoothly and unnoticeably, Acuña's Excursiones is a journey back to the past, full of nostalgia and sadness. Then, in staccato manner, it soon fractures into pieces to then dilute into tranquility and sail on calm waters. (Buenos Aires Herald, Julio Nakamurakare)
