Dieser Band ist aus der Arbeit des von mir geleiteten Teilprojekts über Magazinsendungen im deutschen Fernsehen im Rahmen des DFG-Sonderforschungsbereichs "Bildschirmmedien" der Universität - Gesamthochschule - Siegen hervorgegangen. In diesem Projekt standen zunächst -neben der Rolle des Magazinformats für die Struktur des Fernsehprogramms im ganzen - die politischen Magazine und die Kulturmagazine der BRD im Zentrum der Arbeit. Entsprechend dem triadisch formulierten Auftrag des öffentlich-rechtlichen Fernsehprogramms (Information, Bildung, Unterhaltung) war es geboten, nun auch den Gattungsformen und hervorstechenden Gattungsexempeln desjenigen Magazintyps eine Buchpublikation zu widmen, dem von Produzierenden und/ oder Rezipierenden, u. a. im Bereich der öffentlichen Fernsehkritik, neben anderen Funktionen (Informations-, Ratgeber-, Bildungsfunktion etc.) Unterhaltung als Funktionsdominante zugesprochen wird. Der Band verfolgt die Gattungsgeschichte des 'Unterhaltungsmagazins' (im obigen Begriffssinn) anhand bekannter und repräsentativer Sendereihen oder signifikanter Problemfälle. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf Sendungen von ARD und ZDF, den wichtigsten Sendeanstalten in den ersten Phasen (1953-1963, 1963-1982) dieser Geschichte. Doch werden in den Buchkapiteln zu den folgenden Phasen (1982-1989 bzw. seit 1989) natürlich auch Auswirkungen behandelt, die das duale System -und schon dessen Vorbereitung -auf die Geschichte der Sendeform 'unterhaltendes Magazin' gehabt hat. Insbesondere das Spektrum der VaX-Magazine erwies sich als ein Gegenstandsbereich, dem einerseits theoretische Einsichten im Hinblick auf die Gattung des Bildschirmmagazins, andererseits kritische Einsichten in die besondere Problematik dieser Gattungsform unter den Bedingungen des dualen Systems abgewonnen werden können
