Im Sommer 1990 gestalteten 118 Künstler:innen aus 21 Ländern die Berliner Mauer in Berlin-Friedrichshain. Die Open-Air-Galerie ist als Symbol für das Ende des Kalten Krieges weltberühmt geworden. Der Erhalt des Denkmals war dabei lange umstritten: Erst ab 2000, als längst Baugenehmigungen für die Spreegrundstücke erteilt waren, begann Berlin, die historischen Spuren der Teilung zu bewahren. Das Buch zur Ausstellung der Stiftung Berliner Mauer zeichnet den Wandel des Denkmals nach und beleuchtet die verschiedenen Nutzungen, Aneignungen und Verdrängungen an diesem Ort. Zudem werfen die Autorinnen einen Blick in die Zukunft der East Side Gallery als Ort der Beteiligung, Begegnung und Beschäftigung mit den Themen Mauer, Kunst und Stadt.
