Im Jahr 1897 wurde der Autor eines bebilderten lateinischen Übungsbuchs von seinen Kollegen mit Hohn und Spott überzogen. Heutzutage wäre ein lateinisches Lehrbuch ohne zahlreiche Abbildungen auf dem Schulbuchmarkt chancenlos. Die Arbeit geht den Gründen für diesen erstaunlichen Wandel nach. Ergebnis: Der deutsche Neuhumanismus hatte über die altsprachlichen Lehrbücher der humanistischen Gymnasien ein striktes Bilderverbot verhängt. Als seit dem Ersten Weltkrieg diesem Verbot zum Trotz Abbildungen in die Lateinbücher eindrangen, wurden nur Reproduktionen antiker Originale geduldet. Diese sind aber zur Veranschaulichung lateinischer Lehrbuchtexte völlig ungeeignet. Unter diesem Dilemma leidet die Konzeption lateinischer Schulbücher in Deutschland bis heute.
