A.S. Neill, Schotte, geboren 1883, Gründer der antiautoritären Internatsschule "Summerhill" in England, in der Kinder ihre Kindheit genießen und zur Selbstbestimmung ermutigt werden sollten, schrieb 1938 sein Buch "Die grüne Wolke", das 1971, von H. Rowohlt ins Deutsche übersetzt und von F.K. Waechter illustriert, herauskam. Hier eine identische Neuausgabe. Neill erzählt acht 9-jährigen Schülern eine Fantasiegeschichte über den letzten Menschen in 12 Kapiteln, nach denen die Kinder jeweils ihre Meinung sagen und Vorschläge zur weiteren Handlung machen können. Eine grüne Wolke hat, während die Gruppe einen Rundflug unternahm, alle Menschen auf der Erde versteinert. Als ihr Luftschiff landet, gibt es nur noch Tiere und einige wenige Menschen, mit denen sie sich meist kämpferisch auseinandersetzen muss. Bei den spannend und humorvoll erzählten Abenteuern verlieren nach und nach alle außer Neill ihr Leben. Die Geschichte ist grausam, weil die Kinder es wünschen und humorvoll, damit sie erträglich bleibt. Ein Klassiker zum Vorlesen mit viel Diskussionsstoff, der nicht moralisiert und in jeden Bestand gehört.
