"Auf dem Weg in die Stadt trifft ein Mädchen vom Lande einen Archäologen und verliebt sich in ihn. Der verschwindet kurz darauf spurlos, die junge Frau setzt ihren Weg fort. Sie nimmt eine Stellung als Hausangestellte an und muß entdecken, daß er mit der Frau des Hauses verheiratet ist. Als sie erkennt, welch fürsorgliche, liebevolle Beziehung die beiden pflegen, stellt sie ihre Ansprüche zurück und verläßt das Haus. Eine nur scheinbar private Dreiecksgeschichte, die von der Beziehung der beiden Frauen lebt; hinter dem Privaten werden gesellschaftliche Strukturen und Hierarchien sichtbar. Der Film vermeidet alle melodramatischen Elemente und lebt ganz von leisen Tönen, scheuen Gesten und Andeutungen und ist doch voller Spontaneität. Er war lange in der UdSSR verboten, da die Zensurbehörde ihn als "bourgeois" und "anti-sowjetisch" einstufte." [filmdienst.de]
