TON-U. Die US Amerikanerin Maria Schneider ist eine weltweit anerkannte Bandleaderin, Arrangeurin und Komponistin. Sie wurde bereits mehrfach mit dem Grammy ausgezeichnet. Anlässlich des 100. Geburtstages und 50. Todestages von Kurt Weill realisierte sie am 14. Mai 2000 mit der SWR-Big Band eine Jazzmatinee in der Villa Berg in Stuttgart. Das vorliegende Album enthält die Live-Aufnahme dieses Programms, das aber nicht nur Werke des Dessauer Meisters, sondern auch andere Klassiker der Big Band-Literatur beinhaltet. "Es war ganz großes Kino mit Maria Schneider", erinnert sich der damalige Trompeter der SWR Big Band Klaus Reichstaller. "Sie lässt Solisten großen Freiraum. Maria Schneider komponiert nicht nur, sondern ist in der Lage, das Orchester auf ebenso professionelle wie einfühlsame Weise zu dirigieren. Es gibt eigentlich kaum etwas Besseres, als sie an der Spitze zu haben." Für die SWR Big Band jedenfalls gehören diese Tage im Mai 2000 zu den Höhepunkten der bisherigen Orchestergeschichte.
