Travertin (v. ital. travertino, lat. lapis tiburtinus Stein aus Tibur (heute: Tivoli)) sind mehr oder weniger poröse Kalkgesteine von heller, meist gelblicher bis brauner Farbe, die aus kalten oder warmen Süßwasserquellen, die Calcium- und Hydrogencarbonat-Ionen sowie Kohlenstoffdioxid enthalten, ohne Mitwirkung von Lebewesen (abiotisch) dadurch abgeschieden werden, dass das Löslichkeitsprodukt für Calciumcarbonat durch Entweichen von Kohlenstoffdioxid überschritten wird.
