Im Jahr 1925 geboren und als "lebendes Denkmal" der kongolesischen Musik bekannt, verdankt Papa Wendo seinen Ruhm dem Lied "Marie-Louise", dem man im Volk magische Kräfte zuschrieb. Da es angeblich Tote wieder zum Leben zu erwecken oder die Flussgeister zum Tanzen zu bringen vermochte, wurde sein Interpret von den belgischen Missionaren exkommuniziert. Wendos Leben gleicht einem Roman: Schon früh zum Waisen geworden, war er zehn Jahre lang Fährmann und anschliessend Boxer, bevor er Sänger wurde. Jacques Sarasin ("Je chanterai pour toi") zeigt nicht nur Wendos Wiedersehen mit seinen alten Musikern, sondern auch wunderbare Szenen aus dem Alltagsleben, Aussagen von Nahestehenden, weitere Begegnungen. Seine Kamera hält sich an Münder, Augen, Hände und Instrumente, folgt den Schweisstropfen am Hals. Sie lässt uns die Musik hautnah erleben. Als roter Faden auf dieser Suche nach der Musik eines Mannes und eines Landes dient eine Geschichte, die mitschwingt: Beschimpft von seiner Frau, für die er den Schatten seines Baums verlässt, um sich nach neuen Verträgen umzusehen, nimmt Papa Wendo Kontakt zu seinen früheren Gefährten auf und vereint dreissig junge und ältere Musiker, mit denen er den kongolesischen Rumba dem heutigen Zeitgeschmack anpassen will. Gitarren, Patengué und Mukuassa sollen erneut von Kinshasa bis nach Europa zu hören sein. (Trigon-Film)
