Dieser überaus spannend zu lesende investigative Geschichtsreport erschien erstmals 1984 und liegt nun in der fortgeschriebenen Ausgabe von 1998 auch auf Deutsch vor. Der britische Publizist erzählt von seiner besessenen Suche nach dem mythenumwobenen Verbleib des millionenschweren Gold- und Devisenschatzes, der bei Kriegsende aus den Tresoren der Berliner Reichsbank verschwand und größtenteils bis heute nicht aufgespürt werden konnte. Mit Teilen des Schatzes zogen Altnazis im Bund mit goldjagenden amerikanischen Militärs florierende Drogengeschäfte auf oder finanzierten damit ihren Lebensabend. Sayer bietet eine seriös gearbeitete, mithilfe der London Sunday Times mit Quellenstudien, Zeugenbefragungen, Tatortbesichtigungen etc. über Jahrzehnte überaus akribisch und detailstark durchgeführte Recherche. Seine dichten, lebensnahen Schilderungen dringen hautnah in die Atmosphäre jener wirren Jahre nach Kriegsende ein und vergegenwärtigen eine Zeit der Regel- und Gesetzlosigkeit voller Korruption, unsauberer Geschäfte und unheiliger Allianzen.
