Das Handbuch der Physik, dessen erste Bände hiermit der Öffentlichkeit übergeben werden, soll eine lückenlose Darstellung des derzeitigen Standes der experimentellen und theoretischen Physik bieten. Es umfaßt insgesamt 24 Bände, von denen Bd. I bis III Geschichte, Vorlesungstechnik, Einheiten, Mathematische Hilfsmittel; Bd. IV Grundlagen der Physik; Bd. V bis VIII Mechanik einschließlich Akustik; Bd. IX bis XI Wärme; Bd. XII bis XVII Elektrizität und Magnetismus; Bd. XVIII bis XXI Optik aller Wellenlängen; Bd. XXII bis XXIV Aufbau der Materie und Wesen der Strahlung behandeln. Durch weitgehende Unterteilung des gesamten Stoffes auf die in den einzelnen Sondergebieten tätigen Forscher wurde eine wirklich moderne und kritische Darstellung der Physik angestrebt. Der Plan des Handbuches reicht bis zum Jahre 1922 zurück. Um seine erste Entwicklung haben sich die Herren M. BORN -Göttingen, F. EMDE -Stuttgart, J. FRANCK -Göttingen, W. KOSSEL -Kiel, R. POHL -Göttingen, E. REGENER Stuttgart und M. VOLMER -Charlottenburg verdient gemacht, denen wir auch an dieser Stelle unseren herzlichsten Dank für ihre Bemühungen aussprechen. Beim weiteren Ausbau unseres Werkes haben wir uns der tätigen Mitarbeit der Herren R. GRAMMEL -Stuttgart, F. HENNING -Berlin, H. KONEN -Bonn, H. THIRRING -Wien, F. TRENDELENBURG -Berlin, W.
