***Angaben zur beteiligten Person Schilling: Annegreth Schilling promovierte zur Repräsentation Lateinamerikas im ÖRK in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren und arbeitete von 2008-2011 als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin im DFG-Forschungsprojekt "Globalisiertes Christentum". Seit 2011 lehrt und forscht sie am Lehrstuhl für Ökumenik und Dogmatik an der Evangelisch-Theologischen Fakultät der Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen im Bereich von Ökumenischer Theologie, Kirchlicher Zeitgeschichte sowie Missions- und Kulturwissenschaften.

Das Christentum in Lateinamerika hat im 20. Jahrhundert vor allem durch die Entstehung der Befreiungstheologie in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren internationale Aufmerksamkeit auf sich gezogen. Doch während der Fokus wissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen bislang meist auf der Rolle der römisch-katholischen Kirche lag, bietet Annegreth Schilling einen neuen Zugang an, indem sie den ökumenischen und transnationalen Charakter der lateinamerikanischen Befreiungstheologie detailliert herausarbeitet. Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung steht die Verflechtungsgeschichte zwischen dem Ökumenischen Rat der Kirchen (ÖRK) und dem politisch engagierten, ökumenisch aufgeschlossenen Teil des lateinamerikanischen Protestantismus und die daraus resultierenden Auswirkungen für die globale ökumenische Zusammenarbeit. Der Boom revolutions- und befreiungstheologischer Perspektiven aus Lateinamerika, wie er sich etwa in dem Netzwerk für Kirche und Gesellschaft (ISAL) darstellte, trug - so die der Studie zugrundeliegende These - nicht nur zur Stärkung protestantischer Identitäten in Lateinamerika bei, sondern auch entscheidend zur Ausbildung eines globalen Bewusstseins in der weltweiten Ökumene. Der ÖRK bot für diese Entwicklungen ein einzigartiges Forum - einen, so ließe sich im Anschluss an Homi Bhabha formulieren, "ökumenischen Zwischenraum", in welchem die transkontextuellen Verflechtungen zwischen Erster und Dritter Welt thematisiert sowie damit einhergehende theologische Konflikte und Differenzen verhandelt wurden.
