Schon vor dem "Dritten Reich" galt Thüringen als Hitlers "Trutzgau", wo die Nationalsozialisten nach ihrer Machtübernahme frühzeitig die "Arisierung" jüdischer Unternehmen betrieben und 1937 das Konzentrationslager Buchenwald errichteten. Für den Umbau Weimars zur Hauptstadt des "Mustergaus" setzte sich Hitler persönlich ein. Nach Kriegsbeginn entstanden in Thüringen viele unterirdische Fabriken, in denen KZ-Häftlinge, Kriegsgefangene und Zwangsarbeiter Rüstungsgüter produzieren mussten.
