CAD (Computer Aided Design, rechnerunterstütztes KonstruierenlEntwerfen), CAP (Com puter Aided Planning, rechnerunterstützte Arbeitsplanung) und CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing, rechnerunterstütztes FertigenIMontieren) können heute als gut eingefuhrte und weit verbreitete Werkzeuge des Konstrukteurs, Arbeitsplaners und Fertigungsingenieurs angesehen werden, die in zahlreichen, selbst kleinsten Unternehmen des Maschinen-, Fahr zeug- und Anlagenbaus einschließlich der Zulieferunternehmen und der dienstleistenden Inge nieurbüros angewendet werden. Dennoch ist das in diesen Werkzeugen steckende Potential noch bei weitem nicht ausgeschöpft (man möchte hinzufugen: weder in quantitativer noch in qualitativer Hinsicht), was auch jüngere Untersuchungen des VDMA und des VDI gezeigt haben. Es besteht deshalb - insbesondere in kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen - nach wie vor ein Informationsbedarf bezüglich der Einfuhrung und rationellen Anwendung von CAD/CAM Systemen. Hinzu kommt, daß sowohl auf der Hardware- als auch auf der Softwareseite ein gewisser Wechsel der Systemgenerationen zu beobachten ist (Stichworte Z.B.: RISC-Rech ner, Standardisierung der Betriebssysteme, Standardisierung der betriebssystemnahen graphi schen Benutzeroberflächen, Verfugbarkeit und verstärkte Nutzung praxisgerechter dreidi mensionaler Applikationen, objektorientiertes CAD/CAM, wissensbasierte Systeme/Exper tensysteme, neue Schnittstellen- und Integrationskonzepte), der auch manchen CAD/CAM erfahrenen Praktiker zu einer kritischen Sichtung und Neubewertung der Situation veranlaßt
