Max ist ein schwarzes Kätzchen und dass er mutig ist, sieht man sofort an seinem roten Supermann-Umhang. Klar will er diesen Mut auch unter Beweis stellen und eine Maus fangen. Das grosse Problem dabei ist, dass Max keine Ahnung hat, wie so ein Nager aussieht. Zahlreiche Fehlversuche - er fragt eine Fliege, Vögel, Fische und einen Elefanten, ob sie Mäuse seien - führen schliesslich zu einer frechen Maus, die sich keck als Monster ausgibt. Das, was sie Max als Maus zeigt, ist ein ganz anderes Tier, das tatsächlich nichts für Feiglinge ist. Ed Vere hat in dieser witzigen Bilderbuchgeschichte das Wesen aus "Auch Monster müssen schlafen" zu neuem Leben erweckt. Klare, leuchtende Farben dienen als Hintergrund für äusserst originelle Figuren. Er spielt mit Gröe︢nverhältnissen, expressiver Mimik und hat am Ende einen Schlussgag parat. Gegensatzpaare wie gross und klein, mutig oder ängstlich spielen keine Rolle mehr, wenn Max, begleitet von einer winzigen Fliege, die es auf allen Seiten zu entdecken gibt, auf Mäusejagd geht.
