Wie kann eine verfolgte religiöse Überzeugungsgemeinschaft nahezu vierzig Jahre in einer totalitär verfassten Gesellschaftsordnung überleben ohne ihre abweichenden Wirklichkeitsvorstellungen und devianten Verhaltensweisen aufzugeben ? In der vorliegenden religionssoziologischen Studie wird der Versuch unternommen, diese Fragestellung von einer mehrdimensionalen Perspektive her zu beantworten.Mit Hilfe eines integrierten methodischen Ansatzes sollen die konkreten Erfahrungen der Gläubigen sowie die öffentlichen Wirkungen und Konsequenzen ihres Verhaltens und Verweigerns nicht nur in ihren individuell religiösen und alltäglichen Bedeutsamkeiten betrachtet, sondern gerade auch mit der strukturgeschichtlichen Untersuchung und einer Analyse der herrschaftlichen Verhältnisse in der ehemaligen DDR in Beziehung gesetzt werden. In der alltäglichen Behauptung des subjektiv religiösen Willens und der Fortführung der kollektiv religiösen Praxis findet sich die Antwort und Reaktion der Zeugen Jehovas auf die ihnen vom Staate entzogene religiöse Rede- und Ausdrucksfreiheit.
