Ausgehend von der zunehmenden Lichtverschmutzung (Aufhellung des Nachthimmels durch künstliche Lichtquellen) und die abnehmende Dunkelheit befassen sich die Autoren mit der Voraussetzung von Dunkelheit für unsere Gesundheit (Chronobiologie, Biorhythmus), der Entwicklung des künstlichen Lichts und der Auswirkung auf die Beobachtung des Sternenhimmels sowie der Bedeutung von Dunkelheit auf Tiere und Pflanzen (Insekten, Fledermäuse, Zugvögel). Der 2. Teil, "Im Bann der Dunkelheit", zeigt die "Nacht als Inspiration" (Nachtgedichte, Nacht in Musik, Malerei, Film und Populärkultur). Zur Vertiefung und zum aktuellen Stand der Problematik sind lesenswerte Interviews mit Experten (Astronom, Biologe, Koordinatorin Sternenpark Rhön, Ingenieur) eingefügt. Insgesamt jedoch nicht überzeugend stringent. Eher nach "Das Ende der Nacht" (eindrucksvoll illustriert mit Karten und Fotos zur nächtlichen Himmelsaufhellung, ID-A 5/10; 2. Auflage: ID-B 50/13); P. Bogard: "Die Nacht (ID-A 37/14) oder E.P. Fischer: "Durch die Nacht: eine Naturgeschichte der Dunkelheit" (ID-B 47/15) in größere Bestände einzubeziehen.
