Werner Heisenberg zählt zu den bedeutendsten Physikern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Internationale Anerkennung und Berühmtheit erlangte er durch die Formulierung der Unschärferelation. Allerdings ließ ihn sein reges Interesse für die Philosophie seine naturwissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse immer wieder hinterfragen. Ein Themenkreis, der ihn immer wieder beschäftigte, war der Dialog zwischen Naturwissenschaft und Theologie.
