Dieses Buch widmet sich dem Baugeschehen in Leipzig, der baulichen Planung und Gestaltung der Stadt. Genauer: Es unternimmt den Versuch, über eine Phase der über achthundertjährigen Baugeschichte der westsächsischen Großstadt nachzudenken und sie lebendig zu machen. Das Buch erfasst den Zeitabschnitt von 1945 bis 1990: Wenige Jahrzehnte einer langen Stadt- und Baugeschichte nur, aber eine durchaus spannende und interessante. Es sind die schweren Jahre des Wiederaufbaus nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, mit dem der deutsche Faschismus Europa überzogen hatte, und die Zeit der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik, der gescheiterte Versuch, auf deutschem Boden eine Alternative zur Macht des Großkapitals zu schaffen. Welche Spuren die Stadtplaner, Architekten und Bauleute in diesen 45 Jahren hinterlassen haben, lässt sich genau beschreiben. Aber welchen Platz diese Jahre in der Baugeschichte der Stadt einnehmen, von welchem historischen Wert ihre stadtstrukturellen Entwicklungen und ihre Bauten sind, ist heute noch nicht zu sagen. Erst spätere Generationen werden das endgültig beurteilen können.
