Im Mittelpunkt des reich bebilderten Bandes stehen die Baugeschichte und die Nutzung der Burg durch die SS. Die Autoren schildern, wie die von 1603 bis 1609 erbaute Anlage 1934 von der SS übernommen und nach Plänen des Architekten Hermann Bartels zu einer Schulungsstätte für SS-Führer mit zwei Verwaltungsgebäuden ausgebaut wurde. Ein wissenschaftlicher Stab mit Bibliothek (Leiter: Hans Peter des Coudres) und Museum (Leiter: Wilhelm Jordan) wurde in der Burg untergebracht. Spätere, nicht mehr verwirklichte Planungen sahen den Bau einer neuen Burganlage vor, die in einem Dreiviertelkreis um die alte Anlage herum errichtet werden sollte. Ende Mai 1945 wurde die Burg auf Befehl Himmlers gesprengt. Nach dem Krieg wurde sie jedoch wieder aufgebaut und dient heute als Jugendherberge und Museum. Die Darstelung Russels und Schneiders ist als recht unkritisch vor allem der SS gegenüber anzusehen, Auch das Konzentrationslager Niederhagen, in dem insgesamt 3.900 Häftlinge für den Umbau der Burg arbeiten mussten, wird nur kurz erwähnt.
