Im Jahr 2020 soll nach aktuellem Zeitplan das Humboldt Forum eröffnen – sollten bis dahin alle technischen Probleme gelöst sein. Damit würde nach über sechs Jahren Bauzeit das rekonstruierte Berliner Schloss der Öffentlichkeit übergeben. Mit der (teilweise) wiederhergestellten Hohenzollernresidenz kehrte dann nicht nur eines der markantesten Bauwerke in die historische Stadtmitte zurück. Im 30. Jahr der deutschen Einheit erhielte Berlin endlich jenes lang ersehnte Symbol, das die „neue“ Bundesrepublik und ihre Hauptstadt für alle Welt sichtbar an preußische Traditionen rückbinden soll: die der Aufklärung, der Toleranz und des Humanismus. Mit diesem Brückenschlag zum „anderen“ – besseren – Preußen hätte die Suche nach einer vom 20. Jahrhundert möglichst unbelasteten, Identität stiftenden Meistererzählung im Zeitalter „post-murum“ ihr (vorläufiges) Ende gefunden.
