Während die Geschichte zwischen den beiden Handlungssträngen hin und her springt, entfaltet sich ein gefühlvoll aufgebauter Dialog mit der Vergangenheit. Vor dem Hintergrund liebevoll eingefangener, wunderbarer Aufnahmen des ländlichen Japans, ist "Tränen der Erinnerung - Only Yesterday" sowohl die Geschichte einer Reise zu sich selbst als auch ein Kommentar zu gewissen Dingen, die im alles beherrschenden Streben der Menschen nach Fortschritt und Wohlstand verloren gegangen sind.
