Mit der Abhandlung "Über das Fundament philosophischen Wissens" (1791) macht der Band eine Schrift Reinholds wieder zugänglich, von der Fichte in einem Brief an deren Verfasser erklärte, er habe sie "mehrere Male gelesen und sie immer für das Meisterstück unter Ihren Meisterstücken gehalten". Reinhold unternimmt darin den Versuch, durch die Explikation eines ersten, nicht nur wahren, sondern zugleich auch evidenten Prinzips die Philosophie als "strenge Wissenschaft", als ein ganzes und unteilbares System, zu begründen. Diese "Elementarphilosophie" bildet die Voraussetzung dafür, daß auch die besonderen, abgeleiteten philosophischen Grundsätze der Religion, der Moralität und des Rechts bestimmt und allgemeingeltend werden können. Der zweite Text, "Über die Möglichkeit der Philosophie als strenge Wissenschaft", erschien ein Jahr zuvor in den "Beyträgen zur Berichtigung bisheriger Mißverständnisse der Philosophen" und verdeutlicht den im "Fundament des philosophischen Wissens" nur knapp dargestellten Zusammenhang zwischen Reinholds Forderung nach einem ersten Grundsatz der Philosophie und seinem Philosophiebegriff.
