Content: Eloquent science evolved from a workshop aimed at offering atmospheric science students formal guidance in communications, tailored for their eventual scientific careers. Drawing on advice from over twenty books and hundreds of other sources, this volume presents informative and often humorous tips for writing scientific journal articles, while also providing a peek behind the curtain into the operations of editorial boards and publishers of major journals. The volume focuses on writing, reviewing, and speaking and is aimed at the domain of the student or scientist at the start of her career. The volume offers tips on poster presentations, media communication, and advice for non-native speakers of English, as well as appendices on proper punctuation usage and commonly misunderstood meteorological concepts. A further reading section at the end of each chapter suggests additional sources for the interested reader, and sidebars written by experts in the field offer diverse viewpoints on reference topics.--Publisher description

Content: Since 2015 I have been sharing an old depiction of a European tornado or waterspout on my personal website every week. I became fascinated with these old drawings and diagrams whilst working on a scientific article summarising what we know about these weather phenomena in Europe since the nineteenth century. I am lucky enough that my job - I am a research scientist studying thunderstorms - allows me to rediscover such amazing things about the history of extreme weather events.Over the past six months, I have been working hard to find and select the best quality images and most interesting examples of these fascinating extreme weather events. I have extensively researched the history behind the pictures and condensed the information into interesting descriptions to accompany each image. The book has 100 pages and contains 38 depictions of tornadoes and waterspouts. The depictions chosen for this book range from the most extraordinarily beautiful to those that can shed light on how our understanding of tornadoes evolved in time, from those used as illustrations in scientific articles to those used as illustrations in children's books. Each full page spread shows the image on one side with the description, comments, footnotes, and other information on the other side.

Content: What started out as a communications workshop tailored for undergraduate and graduate students in atmospheric science evolved into a book that will benefit scientists at any stage in their careers. Eloquent Science draws on Schultz’s experience as a journal editor and prolific writer, the insight of his colleagues, and the best advice from hundreds of sources. This must-have reference is loaded with tips for writing and reviewing scientific journal articles and creating and delivering scientific presentations, and features: Help for the entire writing process from planning to proofing, including dealing with writer’s block, creating effective figures, advice for non-native speakers of English, and an appendix of commonly misused scientific concepts; A peek behind the curtain into the operations of editorial boards and publishers of scientific journals-helpful whether writing your own review or responding to someone else’s; Guidance on getting your conference abstract accepted, making effective slides and poster presentations, and presenting with confidence; and sidebars written by experts on topics including citing others’ work, how to critique a scientific paper, answering questions at a conference, and communicating with the media.
