Leonhard Schumacher, dessen sozialgeschichtliche Arbeiten über die Sklaven in der Antike internationale Beachtung gefunden haben, entwirft anhand zahlreicher Quellen ein facettenreiches Bild der antiken Sklaverei. Er beschreibt eindrucksvoll, wie man zum Sklaven wurde - sei es infolge von kriegerischen Ereignissen, durch Menschenraub oder durch Verurteilung. Teils nüchterne, teils anrührende antike Texte und archäologische Zeugnisse veranschaulichen, welche Arbeitswelt die Unfreien erwartete. Manche von ihnen wurden in der Landwirtschaft eingesetzt - einige sogar als Gutsverwalter -, andere wurden in Steinbrüchen zu Tode geschunden; wieder andere dienten im Hause ihres Herrn in verschiedenen, bisweilen wichtigen Funktionen etwa als Geschäftsführer, als Ammen oder als Erzieher der Kinder. So unterschiedlich der Arbeitseinsatz und das Verhältnis zum Herrn war, so unterschiedlich gestalteten sich auch die Lebensperspektiven der Sklaven, von denen einige als Freigelassene später ihr Glück machten.
