Wassermangel ist häufiger Ursache für einen verlorenen Wettkampf als irgendein anderes Ernährungsdefizit. Bei jedem grösseren sportlichen Ereignis, seien es Weltmeisterschaften oder Olympische Spiele, konnten auch Athletinnen oder Athleten gewinnen, die sich unangemessen ernährten. Manchmal konnten sogar übermüdete oder leicht verletzte Sportler den Sieg holen. Aber es hat wohl noch nie ein Athlet einen Wettkampf gewonnen, der an einem eklatanten Wassermangel litt. In kaum einem anderen Teilgebiet der angewandten Ernährungslehre finden sich so viele Fehleinschätzungen und herrscht ein so ausgeprägter Aberglaube wie im Bereich des richtigen Trinkens und der Getränkeauswahl. So ist die Analyse der gegenwärtigen Trinkgewohnheiten sowohl im Freizeit- und Hochleistungssport als auch im beruflichen Alltag, dringender denn je.
