Als die vorliegende Arbeit 1981 begonnen wurde, hatte sich die Praxisdiskussion unter den Industriesoziologen und in der Soziologie noch nicht in dem Maße intensiviert, wie es seitdem geschehen ist. Genauer gesagt: Analysen der moglichen und wirklichen Praxis der Industriesoziologen fehlten weitgehend. Ohne diese breite Erfahrungsbasis blieb die Praxisdiskussion in Vermutungen und Einzelfallschilderungen stecken. Als einzig sichere Grundlage dienten wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Verallgemeinerungen aus der Industriesoziologie, die genügend Ausdeutungen zur Bestimmung des eigenen Standorts ließen. Max Weber wurde zum Sinnbild einer aus sozialpolitischen Traditionen kommenden und großangelegten soziologischen Konzeption, die schließlich in 'wertfreier' Detailforschung folgenlos versandete. Elton Mayo wurde zum Symbol einer zur Managementlehre verengten Industriesoziologie, in der die soziologische Konzeption hinter ihrem Effizienzbeitrag verschwand und mit der letztlich nur das Mißtrauen gegen wissenschaftliche Manipulation geschürt wurde. Georges Friedmann wurde zum Repräsentanten derjenigen, die aus ihrer Sympathie für die Lohnabhängigen keinen Hehl machten und deren soziologische Kritik dabei in einer Ratlosigkeit zwischen Verwerfung und 'Humanisierung' der Industriegesellschaft steckenblieb
