Robert W. Scribner (1941-1998) war einer der anregendsten und innovativsten Sozialhistoriker der deutschen Reformation und der Frühen Neuzeit in Europa. Dieser Band bietet in einer repräsentativen Auswahl von Texten einen Überblick über die zentralen Themen, Ansätze und Ergebnisse seiner Forschung. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Scribners Arbeiten über Formen der Volkskultur und des Volksglaubens im Spätmittelalter und in der Reformationszeit, in denen er sich vor allem mit den vielfältigen Formen wechselseitiger Durchdringung von Praktiken der Volksfrömmigkeit und reformatorischer Glaubenssätze beschäftigt. Besonders interessierte sich Scribner hier für das Spannungsverhältnis von Theologie und Volksreligion sowie die Auseinandersetzungen zwischen religiösen Amtsträgern und Gemeindemitgliedern im Alltag. Einen ganz anderen Zugang zur Volksfrömmigkeit erarbeitete Scribner in seinen späten Aufsätzen, in denen er den Einfluss der Reformation auf sinnliche Wahrnehmungsformen sowie die Bedeutung von Bildnissen für Volksglauben und Volkskultur analysiert. Scribners Schriften haben die religions-, kultur- und kunsthistorischen Forschungen über Reformation und Volksglauben stark beeinflusst. Sie werden hier zum überwiegenden Teil erstmals in deutscher Sprache veröffentlicht.
