Seels Überlegungen kreisen um die seit der Antike immer wieder gestellte Frage, ob das Streben nach Glück mit den Prinzipien der Moral vereinbar sei. Er zeigt an historischen Beispielen (Platon, Kant, Nietzsche) und mit Blick auf die gegenwärtige Diskussion, wie unterschiedlich die Spannung zwischen Glück und Moral bisher beurteilt worden ist. Eingehend analysiert der Hamburger Philosophieprofessor (vgl. auch ID 32/92) Bedeutung und Bedingungen des Glücks und erläutert ethische Positionen, mitunter an sehr konkreten Beispielen. Nach überaus differenzierten Erörterungen kommt er zu dem Fazit, daß der Moral uneingeschränkt Vorrang gebühre, nicht zuletzt deshalb, weil dieser Weg bei aller Unsicherheit zu einem reicheren Leben führe als unmoralisches Verhalten.
