Als Sohn des britischen Königs George V. gehört es zu Berties (Colin Firth) Pflichten, öffentlich zu sprechen. Für den zurückhaltend-besonnenen Mann eine Qual, denn seit seiner Jugend leidet er an einem schweren Stottern. Kein Arzt und kein Psychologe kann ihm helfen, weshalb sich Berties liebevoll sorgende Ehefrau Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) an den exzentrischen Sprachtherapeuten Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) wendet. Mit seinem forschen Auftreten und den unkonventionellen Behandlungsmethoden stößt er seinen adligen Patienten zunächst vor den Kopf. Bald aber zeigen sich erste Erfolge. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters und der Abdankung seines Bruders Edward VIII. (Guy Pearce) wegen dessen Liebe zur geschiedenen Bürgerlichen Wallis Simpson wird Bertie unter dem Namen George VI. 1936 unerwartet zu Englands neuem König. Öffentliche Auftritte und Radioansprachen lassen sich fortan noch weniger umgehen als zuvor, und nicht zuletzt der drohende Krieg erhöht den Druck auf den schüchternen Regenten. Die Zusammenarbeit und wachsende Freundschaft mit Logue hilft Bertie dabei erheblich. Doch kurz vor der offiziellen Krönung stellt eine unerwartete Enthüllung das gegenseitige Vertrauen und damit auch Berties Kampf gegen das Stottern auf die Probe... - Colin Firth brilliert in The King's Speech als stotternder englischer König George VI., den Vater von Königin Elizabeth.
