Note:
Große Fortschritte in der Wissenschaft bestehen oft aus der Entdeckung, wie sich makroskopische Phänomene auf ihre mikroskopischen Bestandteile zurückführen lassen. Die letzteren sind oft entgegengesetzt zu dem intuitiven Konzept, entziehen sich der Beobachtung und bereiten experimentell Schwierigkeiten. So stellte sich beispielsweise heraus, daß es sich bei der Temperatur in einem Gas bloß um die kinetische Energie der Moleküle handelt, aus denen es besteht; die mannigfaltigen Eigenschaften von Materie entpuppten sich als Funktion der Atome, aus denen sie sich zusammensetzt, und die geheimnisvollen Eigenschaften ließen sich auf die Elektronenhüllen zurückführen; man fand heraus, daß Pocken und Beulenpest unmittelbar durch Bakterien - und nicht durch die Rache Gottes - verursacht werden, und wir wissen heute, daß die Reproduktion von Organismen durch die Anordnung von vier Basen auf dem DNA-Molekül bedingt ist. Auch unser psychologisches Leben ist ein Naturphänomen, das es zu verstehen gilt. Und auch hierbei wird man zur Erklärung auf Eigenschaften der Infrastruktur zurückgreifen, die sicherlich nicht offenliegen und wahrscheinlich nicht leicht durchschaubar sind; einer Infrastruktur, deren modus operandi unserem gewohnten Selbstverständnis fremdartig erscheinen mag. Vielleicht ist dies unvermeidbar, da es sich bei dem Gehirn, das wir verstehen wollen, um genau jenes Gehirn handelt, dessen bloßes Beobachtungsvermögen auf die Makroebene fokussiert ist, und das dazu bestimmt scheint, zur Erklärung seines eigenen Verhaltens weit gefaßten Begriffen den Vorzug zu geben. Solche Oberbegriffe sind z. B. "ist hungrig", "will Nahrung", "glaubt, daß sich in dem Loch oben am Eichenbaum Honig befindet" , "sieht den Grizzly-Bären näherkommen"
