TON-E Benjamin Bernheims Album "Boulevard des Italiens" dokumentiert mehr als 100 Jahre italienischer Oper in Frankreich. Musik zwischen Spontinis "La Vestale" und Mascagnis "Amica" singt der Tenor hier auf Französisch, in seiner Muttersprache. Vom Beginn des 19. bis hinein ins 20. Jahrhundert war Paris die Opernhauptstadt Europas. Insbesondere italienische Komponisten zog die Metropole an, denn sie war weltoffen und ihre Städter liebten den Bühnengesang. So entwickelte sich zwischen der französischen und der italienischen Theatertradition ein intensiver Austausch. Stücke wurden, unabhängig vom Land ihrer Entstehung, fast ausnahmslos auf Französisch aufgeführt; und indem die italienischen Komponisten ihre Musik der Klanglichkeit der französischen Sprache anpassten, erschlossen sich ihnen zugleich neue Bereiche melodischer Kreativität. Auf Boulevard des Italiens singt Bernheim eine charakteristische Auswahl der jeweils markantesten Werke. Das Repertoire hat er zuvor gründlich recherchiert, fachkundig beraten vom Palazzetto Bru Zane, einer Stiftung für französische Musik der Romantik. Auf "Boulevard des Italiens" gibt der neue Startenor nicht nur eine Vorführstunde in französischem Operngesang mit einer Diktion von kaum fassbarer Klarheit, sondern auch einen faszinierenden Überblick über die symbiotische Beziehung zwischen Paris und Generationen von italienischen Komponisten.
