Der Band aus der Reihe "Alltagsleben damals" (vgl. u.a. "Die Urgeschichte", BA 9/04) stellt die Geschichte des heutigen Israels, Libanons und Jordaniens von 10.000 v.Chr. bis zu den Anfängen des Christentums vor. Im Vordergrund steht die jüdische Geschichte, doch auch andere in der Region lebende Völker wie die Philister und die Kanaanäer werden behandelt. Dabei geht es überwiegend um deren Alltag (u.a. Ernährung, Bräuche, Freizeit), aber auch um die Religion und den Handel. Außerdem wird auf die Kontakte zu den die Region zeitweise beherrschenden Griechen und Römer eingegangen. 2 Doppelseiten widmen sich dem Leben Jesu und der christlichen Urkirche. Die knappen, verständlichen Texte werden durch zahlreiche, durchgängig 4-farbige, z.T. großformatige Illustrationen ergänzt. Eine besondere Attraktion sind etliche Aufdeckfolien, die es z.B. ermöglichen, ein Haus von innen und von außen zu betrachten. Ein ästhetisch ansprechender, inhaltlich überzeugender Band, der Hintergrundinformationen zur Bibel, aber auch zu heutigen Konflikten liefert.
