Taro ist ein verträumter junger Mann in Tokyo, der einer unbedeutenden Arbeit nachgeht und ein Apartment in einen zum Abriss vorgesehenen Gebäude bewohnt. Eine der wenigen noch verbliebenen Bewohner des Quartiers ist die Mangazeichnerin Nishi, mit der er das Interesse an dem "blauen Haus" nebenan, dem vor Jahren wegen seines besonderen Gartens ein Fotoband gewidmet war, teilt und das sich wie ein Hort der Beständigkeit in der sich ständig wandelnden Großstadt ausnimmt. Während Taro passiv und relativ antriebslos sich treiben lässt, ist Nishi in ihrer Impulsivität kaum zu bremsen und will unbedingt das Haus und den "Frühlingsgarten" erkunden. Erzählt wird meist aus Taros Perspektive in ruhigem, unspektakulären Ton, wobei die Grenzen zwischen Gedanken, Erinnerungen und Träumen zerfließen. Die Einsamkeit und Verlorenheit der modernen Großstadtmenschen, die einfach weiter so vor sich hinleben, wird in diesem in Japan preisgekrönten, kleinen Roman einfühlsam beschrieben und beschert nicht nur Liebhabern japanischer Literatur entspannte, fast meditative Lesemomente.
