This fascinating documentary is about renowned tenor Neil Shicoff as he prepares for the role of a lifetime as Eleazar in the French opera "La Juive" ("The Jewess"). The film offers rare footage of studio recordings, rehearsals, and the tense late-night creative sessions. The opera was being revived for the first time since the Nazis banned it in 1936. It vividly conveys the timeless message about intolerance and fanaticism. The role transforms Shicoff. As he moves from starring in the music video directed by film icon Sidney Lumet to the live performance at the Vienna State Opera, Shicoff is forced to face his own religion, his personal angst, and his mortality. He translates all of this into a level of compassion he never knew he possessed. (Quad Cinema, New York)
