    Series Statement: African arguments
Content: The entwined histories of Blacks and Indians defy easy explanation. From Black Lives Matter protests against Gandhi statues to Kamala Harris's historic election, this relationship - notwithstanding moments of common struggle - seethes with conflicts that reveal important lessons about race in the modern world. Shobana Shankar's groundbreaking intellectual history tackles the controversial question of how Africans and Indians see their differences. Drawing on archival and oral sources from seven countries, she traces how economic tensions surrounding the Indian diaspora in East and Southern Africa collided with the twentieth century's widening Indian networks in West Africa and the Black Atlantic.

Content: Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company exists to challenge narrow perceptions of dance and, in particular, British Asian dance and identity. This is done through the creation and touring of challenging theatrical and site-specific performances and through the delivery of educational projects, workshops and resources. The work explores contemporary issues and themes that revolve around the East/West and tradition/modernity axis. A hybridisation of movement languages and other disciplines is used as a vehicle for exploration across cultures. Surface Tension was first performed in 2000. Resonating with the hybrid influences that arrange and rearrange the dancing body, this dance work uses knots, glitches and contrasts to create a surface that is both energetic and reflective. This comprehensive education resource includes detailed insight into the processes of performance, collaboration and choreography of the piece, along with a beautifully filmed full-length performance. The design and production of costume, lighting and music are also explored, featuring a series of perceptive interviews with the collaborators. (Centre for Performance Research)
Note: Ländercode: 0 , Extras: Full performance of Surface Tension. -Chaptered dance sequences or easy reference. -Jeyasingh discusses her choreography and collaborative process. -Interviews with the creative collaborators, including Kevin Volans , Engl.

Content: How do religions spread in today’s world, where Christian missions have lost influence and modern nations have replaced colonial empires? Religions on the Move is a collection of essays charting new religious expansions. Contemporary evangelists may be Nigerian, Korean, Brazilian or Congolese, working at the grassroots and outside the mainstream in Pentecostal, reformist Islamic, and Hindu spiritual currents. While transportation and media provide newfound mobility, the mission field may be next door, in Europe, North America, and within the “South,” where migrants from Africa, Asia, and Latin America settle. These essays, using perspectives from religious studies, ethnography, history and sociology, show that immigrants, women, and other disempowered peoples transmit their faiths from everywhere to everywhere, engaging in globalization from below
